Phone Number
Please check with either your phone book or your operator for the locality of the dialups listed on our web page so you do not incur toll charges. Pacific Online will not be responsible for charges incurred by use of these numbers.

Dialup Username / Login Name
Make sure that you type your username lower-case (not UPPERCASE or UpPeRcAsE) as the system is case-sensitive and requires lower-case.

NOTE I:
be sure to include the @pon.net in the dialup username if you are setting up your connection manually using Dialup Networking on your computer. For example if your username with Pacific Online was me, then you would need to put me@pon.net here. Also include the @pon.net if you are using CD software version 1.0 or lower.

NOTE II: If you are using Pacific Online CD version 2.0 or higher to setup your dialup connection you do NOT need the @pon.net in your username as it is automatically entered for you.

Password
Your password is also case sensitive like the username, but if you requested uppercase characters in your password you will need to capitalize those characters when entering your password. If your password was password, then you would need to enter it in as password, not Password or PaSsWoRd.

Primary and Secondary DNS Server
Enter these numbers in only if you are specifically requested to do so. Normally if you are on a Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, or Windows ME computer you should set these settings to Server Assigned. If you are on any version of the Macintosh OS, or another operating system, use the numbers listed in the table above.

IP Address
The IP address for your connection should be "Server Assigned" or "Specified by Server" if the option exists. This option is on all the versions of Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, and XP) as well as most versions of Macintosh (OS7, OS8, OS9 & OSX), and a few other operating systems. If your particular operating system does not support that, you will need to sign up for a Static IP if you wish to connect to Pacific Online. If you have signed up and paid for a Static IP you would use the IP address we assigned to you as opposed to letting our server assign one to you automatically.

Default Gateway
This setting, like the IP Address setting, should be left as "Specified by Server" or "Server Assigned". If your particular operating system does not support this option can use 216.229.107.1. For the most part your operating system should support server-assigned Gateway; Windows 95 / 98 / 2000 / ME / XP as well as Macintosh OS7 / OS8 / OS9 should all support this in some form or other.

Email Username
This is for setting up your email in a conventional email program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, or Netscape mail. If you have an @pon.net email address then your Email Username would only be the first part of your email address - ie. NO @pon.net needed.

If you have a domain email such as something@domain.com or .net then you MUST use your full email address as the Email Username. Visit www.pon.net/support for more details on how to setup your email using conventional email programs.

POP3 Server
This server is the incoming mail server for Pacific Online. When you enter in pop3.pon.net enter it as lower-case and make sure not to put any spaces or accidental commas, etc. After you enter in pop3.pon.net double-check that you typed it correctly; if you did not enter it correctly you will run into problems retrieving your email.

SMTP Server
This server is the outgoing mail server for Pacific Online. When you enter in smtp.pon.net enter it as lower-case and make sure not to put any spaces or accidental commas, etc. After you enter in smtp.pon.net double-check that you typed it correctly; if you did not enter it correctly you will run into problems sending email.

For Pacific Online served DSL accounts use smtp2.pon.net.

NOTE: Please note that if you are not connecting through Pacific Online you must use the outgoing mail server of whomever you are connecting through as Pacific Online's SMTP server does not allow non-PON customers to send through it. IE, if you have a DSL or Cable connection and you use a Pacific Online email address, you must use your DSL or Cable providers SMTP server setting, not Pacific Online's.

Web-Based Email
This is our web-based email client. It has many of the features of a regular email program but does not have to be setup like a normal email program. You can also use this web page from any computer in the world that has internet access (not just computers setup with Pacific Online) and a working web browser. Please be aware that this web page can only check the email in your email box on the server; it cannot access email downloaded on your home computer. However, email viewed on this page stays on the server so you can download it when you get home, but email deleted here is permanently deleted from the server.

NOTE: Please note that this page requires Java to work properly so many older browsers that do not support Java will not work with email.pon.net; anything before Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape 4 may very well not work with email.pon.net.

Personal FTP Server
This server is used for those customers who have applied for and have had setup their Personal Web Space. 25 megs of webspace is provided with each 56k dialup account. In your FTP Program you will need to put ftp.pon.net for the Site Name (or Host Name), and for the Username box you will need to put in your Pacific Online username (your email address without the @pon.net). The password will, of course, be the password you requested when you signed up for the web space; if you are unsure of the password something to try would be your email / dialup password and/or the password you requested when you first signed up.

Business FTP Server
This server is used for Business Package subscribers who have a domain name with Pacific Online. To enter your FTP server host name/address you will need to put ftp.(domain).(extension) - the domain part you will want to put your domain name, and for the extension you will want to put the extension for your web site. For example if your site was www.my-web-site.com for the FTP server you would put ftp.my-web-site.com in your FTP program for the Site Name. If your web site has a different extension then com you will need to make that change in the Site Name to reflect that.

NOTE: Your hostname address can also simply be the IP address of your website, but beware, if we move your website to another server, you will no longer be able to FTP to your site - this is why we strongly recommend you make your hostname / address in this format: ftp.(domain.(extension)

If you are having problems using the format above you can try ftp2.pon.net as the Site Name, but please try to use the above format as this setting can change at any time, so to prevent any problems try to use the above format.
If you are using FrontPage Extensions on your website you need to transfer files through FrontPage as FTP transfer will not work with your site.
