These screen shots and
instructions will help you configure Windows NT 4.0 for use with Pacific
Online. NT 4.0
requires RAS (Remote Access Server) to connect to Pacific Online; if you do not have
RAS installed you will need your NT 4.0
Install in order to install RAS.
If you
have any questions about configuring NT 4.0 please call Pacific Online or
write to support@pon.net
You may notice minor cosmetic differences between the
screen shots supplied here, and your computer. This may be due to different
version(s) of the RAS server, or Windows NT 4.0 and should not effect the overall
performance of your system.
|
Introduction
Before the Installation can begin, you will need
to verify that RAS is installed. Double Click on My Computer and Control Panel.
Double-click on the Network icon and continue to Step 1. |

Step 1
Double Click on the Network Icon and
select the Services tab. If you do not see the Remote Access Service (RAS) icon, you
will need to click on Add, and select it from the list of Services to install. Please
note that in order to install RAS, you will need your NT 4.0 Install Disk.
Next Select RAS, then click on Add, and the Add RAS Device screen (shown below) will appear.
|

Step 2
Select your modem from the pull-down list of modems then click OK.
If you have not already
installed your modem, click on Install Modem.
|

Step 3
This next part is important. By default the
Port Usage will be set to Receive calls only. You will need to change this to Dial
out only before you will be able to connect to the Internet. Click the OK button
and the Remote Access Setup window (not shown) will appear. Click the Network button
to bring up the Network Configuration window shown below.
Please note that "Dial out &
Receive calls" option can be used but is not recommended without proper security
options installed on your machine.
Those
options are not covered here, or by Pacific Online technical support and
Pacific Online will not assist you in setting up security options for
receiving connections on your computer.
|

Step 4
Be sure that TCP/IP is the only Protocol
that is checked. Failure to have TCP/IP checked, or having other Protocols checked
may cause your service to function improperly.
Click OK then close the Network Control Panel, and finally reboot your computer
whether you are prompted to do so or not.
|
|
Step 5
Double-click on My Computer, then double
click on the Dial Up Networking folder. The first time you create a dial up, you
will be told "The Phonebook is empty" click OK to add an entry, which will start
the setup wizard (shown below) that will guide you through the remaining steps.
|

Step 6
Erase the contents of the box labeled Name the new
phonebook entry and type in Pacific
Online. Click on Next to continue.
|
Step 7
The only box you need to check is I am
calling the Internet. Once you have done that, click on Next to continue.
|

Step 8
Please refer to our local dial up list here to find a number that will work for
you. Be sure to check with your phone company to make sure that a number will be local for you
before using.
Pacific Online will not assume any responsibility for any
toll charges incurred.
|

Step 9
If you already created a dial up you will
see a screen like the one below, if not click on NEW to add a dial up connection
for Pacific Online.
Clicking on the MORE button will allow you to edit other areas of information.
|
Step 10
Once the dialup for Pacific Online has been
created, go into Dial-Up Networking folder in My Computer. Highlight the Pacific Online dialup from the list. Then choose the
Server
tab and click on TCP/IP Settings and PPP TCP/IP Settings (shown below) will appear. Make
sure that both the IP address and the Name Server Addresses are server assigned.
|

Step 11
You are now ready to connect to the
Internet. Double click on the Dial-Up Networking folder under My
Computer and make sure the Pacific Online dial up option is selected. The
screen to the right should then appear. Enter your Pacific Online Username and
Password (remember password is CaSe SeNsItIvE). Leave the Domain box
blank. Click OK to dial to Pacific Online.
Once the dialer indicates that you are connected, you can double click on your browser and
start surfing the Internet, or open your E-mail client to send and receive
your E-mail.
