These screen shots and
instructions will help you configure Dial-Up Networking to connect to Pacific Online.
Please note that these instructions were designed using Windows 98's
Internet Setup Assistant so if you are using an old version of
Internet Setup Assistant or using Windows 95's Internet Setup
Assistant you may see visual differences from these instructions to
what you have on your computer; this should not effect your ability to
setup your computer too badly, but if you have too much trouble doing
so please contact us and
we will do our best to walk you through the setup.
We do encourage you to try the setup at least once however, there is
no real damage you can do to your computer by running through these
instructions, and the technician you talk to should be able to fix
whatever you may have done.As
always, if you have any questions
or problems with these instructions please contact
us or email support@pon.net |

Introduction
Go to your Start menu, then go to Run. On the Run window look for the
box labeled Open and type in "inetwiz" (all lowercase, typed
as is typed here), then hit Enter on your keyboard.
|

Step 1
Click the dot next to "I want to set up my Internet connection
manually, or I want to connect through a local area network
(LAN)." then click Next at the bottom.
Step 2
Click the dot next to "I connect through a phone line and a
modem" then click the Next button at the bottom.
|

Step 3
Erase the contents of the "Telephone number" box (if there
is anything there), then enter in the Dialup Number for your area. If
you are unsure of that number you can get a list of Pacific Online's
dialup numbers from our web page at http://www.pon.net/serviceareas.
Please be aware that we do not guarantee that any of our dialup
numbers will be local for you so if you have any doubt's that a number
listed for your area may or may not be a toll-free number you can
check by either calling your operator and asking for a list of local
prefixes or check your phone book for a list of local prefixes as
well.
After you have entered the phone number find and un-check the checkbox
labeled "Dial using the area code and country code". Click
the Next button at the bottom to continue.

Step 4
Erase the contents of both boxes, then in
the "User name" box put in your Pacific Online email
address, NOTE: include the @pon.net in the username box, ie,
your full email address - all lowercase and no spaces; then put in your Pacific Online
password in the "Password" box. -->
Click Next to continue.

Step 5
Erase the contents of the "Connection name" box then enter
"Pacific Online (no quotes, just as is typed here). Click on Next
to continue.

Step 6
Click the dot next to "Yes" under the "Do you want to set up an
Internet mail account now?" question, then click Next at the bottom.

Step 7
Click the dot next to "Create a new Internet mail account" then click Next at the bottom.

Step 8
Erase the contents of the "Display name" box then enter in
what you want people to see when they receive mail from you. For
example, if you put your name in the Display name box when people
receive email from you they will see your name as to who the email is
from. Essentially you want to put something here that will be obvious
to people as to who the email is from that you send them. Click Next
when you are finished here.

Step 9
Erase the contents of the "E-mail address" box, then enter
in your Pacific Online email address (your @pon.net email address) in
the box, all lower-case and all one word (no spaces). Click Next to
continue.

Step 10
If you are going to be checking your email from other locations then
your home or if you plan on doing so, click on the pull-down currently
labeled "POP3" then click on "IMAP" to specify to
your email program that you wish to leave your email on the pon.net
server so you can see it from other locations. If you do not wish to
check your email from other locations leave the pull-down menu on
POP3.
In the "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server" box
erase the contents of the box and type in "pop3.pon.net" (no
quotes, all lower-case and no spaces).
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box erase the contents
of the box and type in "smtp.pon.net" (all lower-case, no
quotes and no spaces).
Click Next to continue.

Step 11
Erase the contents of both the "Account name" and
"Password" boxes; now in the Account name box enter in your
Pacific Online email address, but leave out the @pon.net portion (so
if your email address is me@pon.net you want to enter in me). Now in
the Password box enter your Pacific Online password; this part is
case-sensitive so if your password has capital letters you will need
to type them as capital letters. Also, if you wish for the email
program to remember your password so you will not have to enter it in
every time you check your email then you will want to check the
check-box labeled "Remember password" (so the check mark
shows up in the little white box).
Do not check on the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication
(SPA)" box; doing so will prevent you from being able to check
your email. Also, if the check box is checked on for some reason
uncheck the box.
Click Next to continue.

Step 12
If you want the Internet Connection Wizard to connect for you after
you finish setting up you can check the box on labeled "To
connect to the Internet immediately, select this box and then click
Finish". If you do not want it to connect for you simply leave
the check box unchecked.
Click Finish to complete the setup of Pacific Online on your computer.
Conclusion
