These screen shots and instructions will help you configure Netscape
Communicator 6 for use with Pacific Online. If you have any questions or difficulties
please contact
us or email support@pon.net
Please Note: These screenshots were taken using Netscape
6 so your particular version of Netscape may look slightly different but the material
presented here should closely resemble what you will be seeing.
Also, these instructions were made using the Windows version of
Netscape, although
they should work fine with the Macintosh versions.
As always, you may notice minor visual differences between these
screenshots taken from Windows when compared with what you are seeing
on your Macintosh.
|
Introduction
With both the Windows and Macintosh versions of Netscape to access the
Preferences screen go to your Edit menu, then select Preferences.
Step 1
Locate and double-click on Mail & Groups or Mail
& Newsgroups. This area will be labeled one or the other, or
perhaps even something else but will basically be what we are looking
for.

Step 2
Under Mail & Groups click on the Identity selection. On the
right-hand side make sure all the boxes show the correct information
Step 3
These options are purely up to you in how they are setup. We recommend
setting Netscape to send messages by HTML format as you can add
formatting and other nice features using HTML. The only problem with
this is that if you send messages to people using old email programs
or non-standard email programs they may have problems reading the
messages or may not be able to read the message at all. Other then
that the other options are probably best left the way they are by
default if you are not sure what they do.
Step 4
This is the important area for your Mail setup. This window may look
slightly different depending on the version of Netscape you are using
but the information here should basically be what you see and need to
enter in your version of Netscape. For the Incoming and Outgoing
usernames you will need to enter your email address, but leave off the
@pon.net - however if you have a domain name (.com, .net, or .org) you
will need to put your entire email address but instead of using an @
you need to use a $ in the username.
You will also need to make sure your Incoming Mail
server is set to pop3.pon.net (exactly as is typed here) and your
Outgoing Mail server is set to smtp.pon.net (exactly as is typed
here). If you cannot directly edit what is set for your Incoming Mail
server you will probably need to click on the Edit button located near
the box assigned to the Incoming Mail server.
Click the More Options button (if you have it) and continue to Step
4-A.
NOTE:
Business Emails Only: (i.e. .com, .org, .net, .biz -
other) --> Your User name MUST be your full email
address. |
Step 4-A
Leave the IMAP server directory box blank unless specifically told
otherwise by a Pacific Online technician. Also, if you find that you
write long email messages and get disconnected from our idle time
limitation as a result you can check the box on labeled "Check
for mail every...minutes" and set the number in the box to 10 or
15. This way as long as Netscape Mail is open it will check for email
every 10 or 15 minutes thus keeping you online so you can take as long
as you wish to compose emails.
If you wish to have Netscape Mail remember your password so you do not
have to enter it every time you check email then check the box on
labeled "Remember my mail password".
We recommend that you leave the last check box off unless you have a
specific reason to turn it on.
Click OK to save these settings and return to the Preferences window.
Step 5
This window holds the settings for the Newsgroup server that you can
access free-of-charge through Pacific Online. The important
information you will need is the Newsgroup server which is
news.pon.net (just as is typed here) and the Port which is 119. Make
sure that the Secure check box is not checked or you will not
be able to connect to the Newsgroups. The other options are purely up
to you the way they are set.
Conclusion
You are now finished with setting up your Netscape Mail to check
Mail and Newsgroups with Pacific Online. As always, if you have any
questions about the setup or have any problems trying to access Mail
or Newsgroups please feel free to contact Pacific Online's Technical
Support. Our contact information can be found via this link.
