These screen shots and instructions will help you run through the Internet Setup Assistant to setup your computer to access Pacific Online. Some of these Screen Shots may vary slightly from whatever version of OS8 or OS9 you are using; this should not effect setting up the Internet Setup Assistant in any way, they all ask for basically the same information.

Step 1
Open your hard drive and find the folder marked Assistants.

Step 2
Double click on Internet Setup Assistant.insetup.jpg (19719 bytes)
   
Step 3
Now click on the button labeled Register. If you do not see Register look for Update or Configure.os8_3.jpg (10515 bytes)


Step 4

Step 5
Click on "Add Internet configuration".

Step 6
Name the configuration something simple that you will be sure to recognize. This can be your login name, your email address, or maybe just Pacific Online or pon.net but in any event you can use upper or lower-case letters, spaces, and just about anything else. Make sure to select the dot next to "Modem" and not LAN.

Step 7
Select your modem from the list. If your modem does not appear on the list, select the brand closest to your modem. If you do not see anything close to what your modem is, select "". If you are using an I-Mac select "I-Mac Internal 56k". Be sure that the pull-down selection is set to "Modem Port" and that the type of dialing tone is set to "Tone dialing".

Step 8
Enter the dialup phone number for your area in the first box. If you are local to Santa Rosa / Rohnert Park area use 581-0171, otherwise either check our website list or contact us.
Please be aware that we will not be held responsible for long-distance charges incurred by using these phone numbers to dial into our service. If you have any doubt as to whether or not the dialup number(s) we have for your area will be a toll-free call or not please check either with your operator or your phone book before using the phone number.

Step 9
Unless you have specifically requested and paid for a Static IP from Pacific Online, leave the dot nect to "No". Click on the right arrow to continue.os8_9.jpg (7982 bytes)


Step 10

Be sure to enter the DNS addresses exactly as they are shown. After your type in the first server hit "Return" on your keyboard to jump to the second line so you can enter the second server name. Be sure that the Domain Name is entered in exactly as it is shown below.

Step 11
Your E-mail address will be your email address with Pacific Online. Your Email password will be, of course, your email password.

Step 12
For the first box enter your email address, but instead of typing @pon.net enter @pop3.pon.net; for example if your email address is me@pon.net you would enter me@pop3.pon.net in this box. Now enter in smtp.pon.net in the second box. Please enter both the first and second box contents as lowercase with no spaces before or after the names.

Step 13
Included in your Pacific Online internet access is the ability to subscribe and read, free of charge, over 50,000 newsgroups. If you do not know what a newsgroup is, basically it is a place for people to go with similar hobbies and such to meet, exchange ideas and the like. If this is not something you are interested in doing, just leave the box blank and click the right arrow at the bottom of the screen to continue.
If you wish to setup newsgroups you will need to tell the computer what the NNTP, or news server, is. Enter in news.pon.net lowercase without any spaces before or after the name.

Step 14

Congratulations! You have successfully completed the setup of Pacific Online on your computer. If you wish to connect immeadately after finishing the setup of your computer check the box at the bottom labeled "Connect when finished". 
To conclude the setup of Pacific Online click on Go Ahead.
