| These instructions were designed to
provide a simple walkthrough for the commonly-used FTP program CuteFTP. Please
note that for problems with CuteFTP we do not provide technical support for
this program but we have enough requests for help with this program to
provide a web page to assist you with setting up and using CuteFTP. |
| |
| Step 1 - CuteFTP Main Screen |
 |
This is the first screen you will see when you start CuteFTP. Here are the
descriptions of the various boxes and buttons you will see on this first
screen. Some versions of CuteFTP have a "Session Properties"
window that appears above this window; simply click on the Cancel
button or the X at the top-right of the screen to close that window to
get to this area.
URL:
The URL listing is the name of the server your website resides on. If
you have a personal website with us (a home.pon.net address) the URL
listing you would use is ftp.pon.net. If you have a business
account with us and a domain name address (a .com, .net, .org, etc
website) the URL listing you would use is ftp.yourdomainname.ext
where the yourdomainname section is your domain name followed
with your domain name's extension. For example, if your domain name
was www.mydomainname.net your URL listing would be
ftp.mydomainname.net.
User Name:
The User Name box is where you enter your username to connect to your
website. For personal websites the username is usually your email
address without the @pon.net. For example if your email address
is me@pon.net your FTP Username would be me.
For business accounts the username is going to be your domain name
without the www and the extension. For example if your domain name was
www.mydomainname.net your username would be mydomainname.
Password
The Password box is where you put in your FTP password. This does
not differ an any way as do the URL and User Name boxes. Please be
aware that if you signed up for a password with capital letters you
must enter the password in this box exactly the way you gave it to us
when you signed up as the password is case sensitive.
All other Settings that you may need to use are automatically handled
by CuteFTP so things like Host Type, File Type, etc are already taken
care of when you attempt a connection with CuteFTP.

| Step 2 - CuteFTP and Uploading Your Files |
Left Screen |
| |
Right Screen |
| |
CuteFTP and Your Files
When you login to CuteFTP, you will see a screen split down the middle, with
two white boxes on either side of the screen. The
screen on the left
(screen shot shown above) shows your
computer's hard drive contents; more specifically the default folder on your
computers hard drive, usually the main (root) directory on your hard drive. The screen on the right
(also shown above) shows the files that you have in your website's
directory. To find the directory you have your website located
at, click on the Up-Arrow Folder (the button with a yellow folder & up
arrow) "c:" folder (when the "Local System" box says just
"c:\"), then find the folder your files are located in. This works
very much like Windows Explorer so if you are familiar with finding
files on your hard drive you will have no problem navigating through
your files in CuteFTP.
Uploading files to your website
Once you have the folder on your computer where your website files are,
right-click on the file you wish to upload, then click on Upload and the file
will then upload to your website. If you wish to grab a list of files,
simply click on the first one, hold down Shift on the keyboard, then click
the last one to select a block of files. If you wish to only select certain
files out of a list, click on the first file you wish to select, hold down
the "Control" (or "Ctrl" on some keyboards) key, then click the other files
you wish to select.
Downloading files from your website
To download a file or multiple files from your website, simply right-click
on the file and select "Download" and the file will download
from our server to the file you are looking at on the left-hand panel on your
computers hard drive. If you
wish to grab a list of files, simply click on the first one, hold down Shift
on the keyboard, then click the last one to select a block of files. If you
wish to only select certain files out of a list, click on the first file you
wish to select, hold down the "Control" (or "Ctrl" on some keyboards) key,
then click the other files you wish to select. |
| |
| That
is basically all you will primarily do with CuteFTP; the rest of the
work on your site is done with a web page editing software (Notepad for HTML code, FrontPage for WYSIWYG editing,
etc). If you have any problems connecting to
your site or finding files on your website that should be there, etc please
let our technical support know at support@pon.net;
unfortunately we we cannot provide phone support for web page problems. |
